A Brief History of RCHS

Rhea County High School opened its doors to a very excited group of students and teachers for the first time in August 1974, when Spring City High School’s Bulldogs and Rhea Central High School’s Yellow Jackets came together as Rhea County’s proud Golden Eagles. The new modern consolidated school was built in Evensville, Tennessee, half-way between Dayton and Spring City. The architects won awards for its open-space concept which over the years was gradually modified into a more traditional design. The school featured, in addition to expanded academic courses, a new vocational wing, enabling students to explore many career options. Additionally, the brand new high school had many features to enhance safety, security and learning such as security cameras at the main entrances and at various points in and around the building, a security guard and full-time nurse, and a state-of-the-art intercom and public address enabling instant communication between classrooms and the main office. The school featured modern labs, a fully equipped Little Theater, and comfortable spacious classrooms.

2013 marks the 40th year since the consolidation and creation of Rhea County High School, and in the Fall of 2013, students, staff, and faculty moved into a brand new, spacious two-level facility which the Eagles now call home. In 2013 the consolidated school of 1974 was remodeled to house Rhea County Middle School, and a new facility for Rhea County High School was built adjacent to it. The new Rhea County High School, a spacious two-story building with its adjacent Career Technical Education wing, covers 332,000 square feet. State-of-the-art climate controls provide a comfortable, healthy environment in which to work and learn. Six computer labs, along with updated physics, chemistry, biology, and physical science labs allow for hands-on learning in all academic areas. High-speed WiFi connectivity, computer tablets and hard-wired computers in the classrooms help prepare Rhea County students for the technical demands of the 21st century and literally put the world at their fingertips. Three new gyms and a new athletic field surrounded by a new track that is the envy of many schools provide exciting room to meet the needs for healthy physical activity. The auditorium more than doubles the size of the previous facility. The architect’s vision to design a building which would inspire students and teachers to look higher to new objectives is embodied in the Eagle wing-like curl of the walls and the upswept ceilings in the hallways and in the canyon of the Commons. Rhea County High School is truly a place of which all Rhea County can be proud.
